GRANADA – Today, 4 February, the women’s ice hockey tournament at the Winter Universiade in Granada faced-off with Kazakhstan versus Canada. The Canadians are the team to beat. Since the instalment of women’s ice hockey on the Universiade sports programme in 2009 in Harbin, China, the Canadian women never lost a game winning three gold medals in a row, i.e. Harbin (2009), Erzurum (2011) and Trentino (2013).
Team Kazakhstan made its debut at the Winter Universiade women’s competition today, in preparation of Almaty hosting the next edition in 2017. The Kazakh women were a bit awed by their Canadian opponents who slightly overpowered them in an exciting game that ended 7-1 in favour of Canada. Meruyert Ryspek scored the sole goal for Kazakhstan and was really happy about it. “It’s a historic goal”, she said. “I’m really happy as Canada is a very strong team. I’m also very proud to wear the national jersey at this Universiade. We are all very excited about the games as we will be hosting the next edition in two years.”
