ALMATY – On 23 May, the ‘International Olympic Day’ in Almaty was celebrated with a 12 km bike ride with the departure at the International Ski Jumping Complex ‘Sunkar’ and the arrival at the Central Stadium. The activity was an organisation of the ‘Management of International Sport Projects in Almaty’, which runs the Organising Committee of the 2017 Winter Universiade and the Bid Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Almaty 2022.
Akhmetzhan Yesimov, the Mayor of Almaty, welcomed all participants of the event. “Today, in honor of the International Olympic Day, the city authority organised a variety of activities, including a huge bike ride, attended by thousands of citizens, who have shown a serious intention about a healthy lifestyle, and also about Almaty’s victory in a race to host the 2017 Winter Universiade. I am very proud to announce that all enormous efforts by the Almaty Universiade Organizing Committee and the local authorities have delivered for the city such an honorable moment to be the capital of one of the biggest sport events in the world. I hope this big sport event will help Kazakhstan to integrate into the international sport community and show the world how much pride we have hosting the 2017 Winter Universiade. We welcome the world to the Winter Universiade in 2017.”
