CANADA – Canadian tennis player Raheel Manji is coming off his first year at Indiana University and is set to represent Canada at the Universiade. Manji has made quite a splash on the Canadian junior tennis circuit having captured the Under 16 Canadian singles and doubles titles in 2013. He’s a three time doubles Canadian national champion and was a member of Canada’s Jr. Davis Cup team.
“I would say playing the deciding doubles match in the Jr. Davis Cup vs. the United States,” would be my most memorable tennis moment so far said Manji. “That was probably my most fun match I have been apart of just with the crowd getting so behind us.”
Manji plans to play tennis professionally after he graduates from Indiana. In his first year with the Hoosiers Manji has been superb on the court. He led the Hoosiers in singles wins with an 18-9 record.
“I really believe that it was best for my tennis and development. I also was really fond of the hype and adrenaline that comes with college tennis.”
Manji says it feels great to have made the Canadian Universiade tennis team, “I love participating in events like this one but the World University Games being so renowned and prestigious makes it that much more special.”
Manji joins Alexander Day and Roman Trkulja on the men’s team. While Jena Cheng, Louise Kwong and Evangeline Repic round out the women’s side. All hail from Universities in the United States.
The last time Canada won a medal in tennis was the 1993 Universiade in Buffalo – Robert Janecek & Jamie Laschinger captured the bronze medal in men’s doubles. It has been 32 years since Canada won gold in tennis at the Universiade.
