GWANGJU – The Zimbabwean delegation at the 28th Universiade in Gwangju Korea, is according to its Head of Delegation Mr. Liberty Maidza, a good and sizeable one compared to previous Universiades. Moreover, he expects the student-athletes to do well at these games. The Women’s Volleyball according to the HOD is an area the country intends to shine, they also will be looking at athletes like Leonardo Musikavanhu, a 100 and 200 meters runner who’s eager to improve his previous performance as a semi-finalist in Kazan two years ago, also to Golfer Madeline Chinembiri who according to Mr. Liberty is a real contender. “We are still in the development stages in the concrete establishment of University Sports in our country, but we will get there, we have done well previously in international sports. We just need to focus on maintaining our standards and growing from there”, the delegate explained. “We are evolving, the number of our participation is growing thanks to the support of the Zimbabwe University Sports Association and other universities that raised money for us to be here. Sports in Zimbabwe has really taken off at the Grassroots, we have academies now that cater for the young, and we know it is necessary to groom the young ones early. As for Africa, we might not be there yet but we are getting near and we need our little success stories told too not just the negative.”
