LUCERNE – Central Switzerland – The last day of the Evaluation visit for the Winter Universiade 2021 was dedicated to the inspection of the proposed venues for Curling, Snowboard and Freestyle Skiing.
In Engelberg – Canton of Obwalden, the FISU Evaluation Group with Vice President Marian Dymalski, CTI Chairman Roger Roth, WU Director Milan Augustin und WU Assistant Paola Forni were welcomed by the Mayor of Engelberg Martin ODERMATT, the representative of the sport centre and ski resort Engelberg-Titlis.
The first venue visited was the Sporting Park Engelberg ice stadium – proposed for Curling, which has all the necessary facilities needed for the Winter Universiade. The evaluation group took then the brand new cable-lift, opened in December 2015, to reach the slopes planned for Snowboard and Freestyle Skiing competitions. Those modern facilities are daily used by the students of the National Performance Centre based in the village which prepares the best young Swiss athletes for a career in international sport. Technical aspects and possible plans for temporary/permanent facilities were discussed, behind the project there is a huge legacy not only for the athletes but as well for the tourists and local population.
During the conclusion meeting the Evaluation Group expressed its satisfaction. “We were very happy to meet experienced and very motivated people at the different venues and enthusiastic political representative of the localities and cantons. We would like to thank the candidate OC for the hospitality and very well organised visit, we look forward to the presentation of your candidature to the FISU Executive Committee in Brussels on 5 March 2016”, concluded Marian Dymalski.
