7th WUC Cycling – Germany, Poland & Japan dominate Mountain Bike Eliminator

TAGAYTAY – Different discipline today, 19 March, in Tagaytay (PHI) for the 2016 FISU World University Cycling Championship with the beginning of the mountain bike competitions. For this third day of competitions, the spectators gathered on the spectacular MTB course had a chance to see some of the best student riders in the world compete in the eliminator. This spectacular format consisting of a time trial for each athlete and then heats of four on a short lap including steps, a rock garden and many impressive downhills gave way to impressive actions.

Women’s Podium

In the women’s competition, the final opposed four athletes, Wiedenroth (GER), Turobos (POL), Ainota (JPN) and Lou (CHN). After a good start of the Polish rider, Wiedenroth (GER) undertook a spectacular action to take the lead and keep it until the end, confirming the German delegation’s domination in the women’s competition with three gold medals in three races. She was followed by Turobos (POL) adding another medal to the Polish total while Ainota (JPN) collected the first medal of her delegation after a series of good positions for the Nippon athletes on the road events.

In the men’s competition, four athletes fought for the medals again and once more, the podium was shared by Poland, Germany and Japan. As in the previous days, the German athlete Wolf could not equal his female partner and was beaten by the Polish Marcin Kawalec by a few seconds. Maeda (JPN) who qualified for the final after the fall of one of his opponents – Poland’s Kurczab – collected the second medal for Japan, again in bronze.

Men’s Podium

Sunday, the final races of this 2016 FISU World University Cycling Championship will take place, with both men’s and women’s Cross Country Olympic distance races.
