MALAGA – Today, Monday 27 June, the 23rd WUC Handball will start. The women’s competition will kick-off first with four games in the morning. At 10:00 Uruguay vs. Czech Republic in the Fernando Argüelles Arena and Russian Federation vs. Poland in the TCA. At 12:15 host Spain will begin its competition vs. Japan, match that will be held in the Fernando Argüelles Arena. At the same time, in the TCA, India and Romania will play the last game of this first competition day of the group phase.
The men’s competition will start in the afternoon. At 16:30 Portugal plays Egypt (Argüelles) and Korean Republic will face off against India (TCA). The match that closes the day will be Spain vs. Chinese Taipei. This game will be in the Fernando Argüelles venue, at 21:30h, right after the opening ceremony.
A total of 16 national teams, 8 men’s and 8 women’s, will compete at the 23rd World University Handball Championship. Two pools of eight have been created in both categories. In the men’s competition, Pool A consists of Spain, Russian Federation, Chinese Taipei and Japan. Pool B has Portugal, Romania, Egypt and Korea. In the women’s tournament Pool A is composed of Spain, Romania, Japan and India while Pool B has Russian Federation, Czech Republic, Poland and Uruguay.
The competition system established a group phase of three days (Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th). After the group phase, Thursday will be a day off. The women’s competition will have its semi-finals on Friday 1July and the finals on Saturday 2nd. The men’s competition will have its semi-finals on Friday and Saturday and the final on Sunday 3rd.
