After a first day full of surprises, the second day of the WUC Orienteering 2016 left place to the most traditional discipline of the sport, the long distance events, and this was clearly reflected in the results with a strong domination from the Nordic countries.
In the men’s competition, six of the best ten runners were coming from Sweden, Finland and Norway, but it’s Sweden which clearly showed a strong domination on the discipline placing 3 athletes in the top 4. Rassmus Andersson won the gold concluding the 13.8km race (23 controls) in 1:23:59, more than 2 minutes ahead of the silver medallist Kaspar Hägler, the swiss runner taking one more medal for Switzerland on the occasion of the Swiss national day, and Johan Runesson (SWE) grabbing bronze for 11 seconds ahead of his fellow countryman Anton Sjokvist.
The women race proved as dominated by Nordic countries with seven runners out of the top 10 coming from the region. This time again, the gold and bronze medals went to the same country, Finland placing Anna Haataja on the first step of the podium while Miia Niitynen won the bronze. Ingjerd Myhre (NOR) brought Norway its first medal of the competition, being beaten by only 9 seconds after 9.8km of an intense forest course including not less than 20 controls.
On Tuesday, the athletes will enjoy an urban competition with the sprint relay taking place downtown Miskolc as a way to promote both the city and the discipline with the most spectacular event of orienteering.
