MISKOLC – Two days after the individual sprint races, this third day of the World University Orienteering Championship was dedicated to the mixed team sprint relay. Orienteering is often seen by the non-initiates as an obscure forest activity, but today, the street of the city of Miskolc turned into a giant playground for the 24 mixed teams registered in the title race.
Not only did the athletes have to deal with the urban landscape of the fourth city of Hungary, but they also had the chance – and the challenge – to face the hundreds of locals and tourists, attracted by the action who came and cheer for them.
In this exciting race, the British team composed of Charlotte Ward and Megan Carter Davies respectively 7th and 8th of the individual competition, Kristian Jones, winner of the individual sprint on Monday and Peter Hodkinson 9th of the same event, was clearly favourite. Nevertheless, few people could have expected such a large win for this race with almost a minute difference with their closest chasers. Czech Republic (Jana Knapova, Milos Nykodym, Jan Petrzela and Denisa Kosova) confirmed its individual results taking silver while Norway (Sigrid Alexandersen, Emil Ahlbäck, Trond Einar Pedersli and Ingjerd Myhre) seized the bronze medal.
The day was continued with the awarding of the long distances medals and of the mixed team sprint relay and finally concluded by the head of delegation dinner hosted by the Mayor of the city of Miskolc in the celebration hall of the city hall.
The British team confirmed its domination on the sprint and will try to battle for medals in the middle distance with Switzerland, Czech Republic and the impressive Nordic teams on Wednesday in Javorkut.
