POZNAN – It was a really exciting morning in Poznan! Saturday, 3 September, was the day of semi-finals and repechages on the Malta Regatta Course. Contestants of the 14th WUC Rowing 2016 were trying to face the challenge and get promoted to the finals.
The session started with men’s double sculls repechage. In the first heat Simone Martini and Michele Ghezzo (Italy) turned out to be the best, just before Trevor Jones and Graham Peeters (Canada). The second race ended up with a victory of the Polish rowers Dawid Grabowski and Adam Wicenciak. Adam Sterbak and Matyas Klang (Czech Republic) took the second place. These four crews made it to the final.
In women’s double sculls repechage Emily Carmichael and Rebecca Girling (United Kingdom) and Helena Hlas and Shannon Kennedy (Canada) were the fastest.
Crews from Poland, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Canada moved up to the final in the men’s four.
In the next repechage, women’s lightweight double sculls Kathrin Morbe and Katrin Thomas (Germany) and Zuzana Necasova and Monika Novakova (Czech Republic) were awarded with promotion to the final.
In the women’s lightweight single sculls repechage Federica Pala from Italy and Robyn Hart-Winks from the United Kingdom reached the final.
Canada and Poland completed the line-up for the final in the women’s four.
The winners of the first repechage in women’s single sculls were Julia Leining (Germany) and Marleen Verburgh (the Netherlands). The first place in the second race was taken by Lucie Zabova (Czech Republic) before Monika Dukarska (Ireland). All of them can start preparation for the final A.
In the men’s lightweight double sculls Francois Teroin and Luke Epain (France) and Bence Tamas and Bence Szlovak (Hungary) were the fastest in the first repechage. In the second race Peter Zelinka and Richardo Vanco (Slovakia) and Jakob Ingr and Marek Hodrment (Czech Republic) promoted to the final.
In the men’s eight crews from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Hungary took the first four places and were advanced to the final.
Jakub Podrazil and Lukas Helesic (Czech Republic) won the first semi-final in the men’s pair. Angus Moore and Nathan Bowden (Australia) ended up in second place. The Polish rowers Rafał Kowalczyk and Damian Rosolski were third. From the second semi-final Corey McCafrey and Louis van Velthooven (New Zealand), Antti Kilpelainen and Koel Naukkarinen (Finland) and Alexander Haynes and James Robson (United Kingdom) managed to move up to the final.
In the men’s single scull Michal Plocek from Czech Republic was the best in the first semi-final. Maximilian Fraenkel (Germany) and Bendeguz Petervari-Molnar (Hungary) also got promoted to the final. Dominik Czaja (Poland), Adam Rabalski (Canada) and Federico Garibaldi (Italy) were successful in the second semi-final and made it to the final.
Federico Gherzi (Italy), Matthew Christie (Canada), James Brittain (RSA), Jerzy Kowalski (Poland), Daniel Matyasovszki (Hungary) and Marek Reznak (Slovakia) will fight for the medals in lightweight men’s single sculls competition.
The brand new competition in the schedule of WUC Rowing – mix four ‘race for lanes’ ended up with the victory of the Polish crew who was faster than Czech and French ones.
Today, Sunday 4 September, the finals are scheduled. All medallists of the 14th WUC Rowing 2016 will be known. It’s going to be an exciting day on the Malta Regatta Course!
