POZNAN – On Thursday afternoon, 1 September, the General Technical Meeting of 14th World University Rowing Championship was held next to the Malta Lake. The FISU Members, The Organising Committee Members and heads of delegations took part in the meeting.
At the beginning of the GTM the FISU First Assessor and member of the FISU Executive Committee Verena Burk welcomed all participants, including FISU Medical Committee Dr. Dusan Hamar, FISU International Control Committee Member Mr. Petar Zografov, FISU Rowing Technical Delegate Mr. Matt Draper, ISF President of the Jury Mr. Przemysław Knigawska, FISU WUC Department Member Mr. Julien Buhajezuk and the Chairman of the Organising Committee Tomasz Szponder. Then, the Vice-President of the Polish University Sport Association Tomasz Szponder introduced the members of the Organising Committee.
During the GTM the heads of delegations received all necessary information about the competition: the draw, the race schedule and rules of competition.

Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony took place in Culture Centre ‘Zamek’ in Poznan. The event was attended by FISU Vice-President Mr. Marian Dymalski, EUSA President Adam Roczek, FISU 1st Assessor Ms. Verena Burk, Deputy President of Poznan Mr. Tomasz Lewandowski and Chairman of the Organising Committee Mr. Tomasz Szponder.
The ceremony opened with an introduction of all 26 participating countries. One athlete from each country took part in the parade. Then, the Polish flag was hoisted by Natalia Madaj who won a gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics and the Polish national anthem was sung by the Poznań University of Technology Choir ‘Volantes Soni’. All guests and participants of the WUC Rowing 2016 were welcomed by The President of Wielkopolska Region University Sport Association Mr. Tomasz Szponder. Ms. Verena Burk gave a short speech. She expressed her thanks to all people involved in the preparation of the Championship and wished contestants a great event and good luck in the Championship. The Deputy President of Poznan Tomasz Lewandowski declared the World University Rowing Championships 2016 open.
‘2be Violin Duo’
The university choir solemnly sang the official FISU anthem ‘Gaudeamus Igitur’. Then, the ceremony proceeded with the oaths which were taken by the Polish Olympian from Rio de Janeiro Anna Wierzbowska and one of the judges, Przemysław Knigawka.
The ceremony ended with an excellent performance by the female ‘2be Violin Duo’.
The main competition from 2 to 4 of September will take place on Malta Lake. The first races will start at 10 am.
