6th WUC Shooting Sport – Overview Day 1

BYDGOSZCS – The first day of the 6th edition of the WUC Shooting Sport in Bydgoszcz kicked-off with three disciplines, i.e. women’s air pistol 10 m, men’s rapid fire pistol 25m and women’s trap with six gold medals at stake (individual and team event).

The French brought some distinguished shooters with them, like Jean Quiquampoix, already a silver medallist at the Olympic Games in Rio. At 20, the young Frenchman had a good year with the addition of his silver medal in Rio and a victory in the final standings of the ISSF World Cup. Already a world champion, this student-athlete from the University of Aix-Marseille is experiencing a very early blooming but altogether predictable as announced by an unchallenged supremacy in the junior category where he won the European and world title. He is also owner of all world records. Chinese Lu and Korean Park, 2nd and 3rd respectively, were never able to block off his road to the WUC gold. Together with teammates Vincent Polo and Richard Laverrou-Krausercharles, Jean Quiquampoix took another gold in the team event by easily beating Korea and Italy.

Even younger, being 19 years old and already very talented, Mathilde Lamolle (FRA) won the women’s 10m air pistol. This student in Sport Science at the Aix-Marseille University also participated in the Rio Olympics where she narrowly missed the final due to a technical incident. Already national champion of France, 3rd at the senior European Championships, World Junior Champion, this French shooter has a bright future ahead of her. It is however with a tiny advantage of a tenth of a point (198.4 to 198.3) she beat Poland’s Klaudia Bres (silver) with Czech Tereza Pribanova (bronze) completing the podium. The team event was won by Thailand ahead of Poland and Chinese Taipei.

For those who still doubt that trap is an Italian specialty, talk to the new university champion Alessia Montanino, runner-up Silvana Maria Stanco and 4th Alessia Leazzi. These three Italian shooters, together of course, won the team classification. Only the Slovak Lucia Boorova was able to avoid a historic All-Italian medal podium by slipping into third place. When looking at the curriculum vitae of these three Italian shooters, their supremacy is no longer surprising. Alessia Montanino (23), who studied psychology at the University of Naples is an Italian champion and has already shown her skills at the European Junior Championships; Silvana Maria Stanco (23), student of physical education at the University of Zurich, has already won two World Cups, the Universiade in Kazan and Gwangju and other WUC titles, and young Alessia Leazzi, studying psychology at the University of Rome, has already finished third in the World Cup and regularly mounts on the international podium in the junior category. So it’s no coincidence that India, second in the team event and Poland third, remained far behind the Italians.
