BYDGOSZCS – Three competitions to top of the fourth day with men’s 50m pistol, men’s skeet and the women’s 50m rifle prone position.
We’ll start with the victory of Italian Giancarlo Tazza in the men’s skeet whose appointment with University Sport is almost always a success, with on his resume gold in Wroclaw 2010, in Shenzhen 2011 and in Al Ain 2014. The least we can say is that both during the competition and in life, this 28 year-old student, who completed his engineering studies at the University of Naples, does not lack determination. “I came here to win especially as it was my last university championship. I work with the police that I would like to thank, along with the Italian Federation for all the help given. I’ve already won a world gold medal team at the World Championships in Lima but it’s true that I have a special relationship with the university. I did not have too much pressure because the level in Italy is so high that winning in Italy is more difficult than winning a World Cup Championship. I train 7 times a week in Capua under the guidance of former Olympic champion Falco. I am truly obsessed by perfection and I would like to thank especially my family that supports me financially since I started. And I dedicate my victory to my girlfriend Francesca who’s birthday was yesterday. My objective? Tokyo 2020 and tomorrow, I swear, I start practice again!” The Finn Tommi Takanen and Czech Jakub Tomecek completed the podium while the team competition was won by Finland, followed by the Czech Republic and Cyprus.
The men’s 50m pistol was won by Slovenian Kevin Venta who, after a thrilling final, beat the Pole Tomasz Wawrzonowski and British gunner Kristian Callaghan. Kevin Venta, aged 25, is a student in agricultural sciences at the University of Maribor and believes that his change in training pace has been beneficial to him: “Before, I had a pretty crazy rhythm practicing every day of the week, school from 8h00 to 15h00 before making a jump from home to the training which I submitted myself to again during the weekend. Now I have a calmer pace and I got my absolute best international result. My other feat of arms was to break the national record, which was 43 years old, with a total of 562 points. I always have to overcome my stress in competition. This was still the case today and I had my arm trembling. I started in my bubble, did not look around me and did not listen to the announcer commenting the evolution of the competition.” Italy won the team competition before Korea and Romania.
Last event of the day, the women’s 50 meters rifle prone position, a non-Olympic discipline was won by the Swiss 22 year-old Renée Peeters. She was surprised but also thrilled to be on the top of the podium. “I knew that with my total of 622.5 points, it was my personal best, I would finish in the top eight but then to win … Especially since I don’t practice more than three times a week. I give priority to my food technology studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Zurich. My previous best was a silver medal in the team competition at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Granada.” The Czechs Lucie Brazdova and Aneta Brabcova completed the podium but were consoled by winning the team classification before China and Korea.
