8th WUC Sailing Update

29 September 2016

PERTH – Perth’s iconic Swan River has set the perfect scene for the 2016 World University Sailing Championship. 82 student-athletes from nine nations began the first day of competition on Monday 26 September. The first three days enabled athletes to familiarise themselves with their opponents through round robin racing. Tuesday tested the athletes’ ability with rough weather conditions closing competition early. At the completion of this stage, for the Open competition, Boulden (Australia) lead the field over Galati (Italy) and Dargaville (Australia). In the Women’s competition, Switzerland’s Bezel topped the ranking, with Koh (Singapore) and Parker (Australia) closely behind.

Weather conditions have cleared and the sun is shining as semi-finals begin and the competition grows fiercer, with the highest ranked skipper choosing their opponent. Friday will see the strongest fleets compete for the overall title of the 8th World University Sailing Championship in both the Open and Women’s category. The event’s closing and medal presentation ceremonies will be held at 2:00pm Friday 30 September and student-athletes will come together for one last time at the Royal Perth Yacht Club prior to their departure.
