CHIANG MAI – There were 18 fights taking place on the second day of the 7th World University Boxing Championship in Chiang Mai, Thailand. One of the highlights from the championship was the women’s middleweight bout (69-75 kg) between Christiana Desmond from Ireland and Zura Kussainova from Russia. The Irish fighter took victory with the final score of 39-37, 40-36 and 40-36. Throughout three rounds, Desmond continuously threw more punches driving the Russian opponent into the corner.
Another highlight was the flyweight bout (52 kg) between Tanes Ongjunta from Thailand and Subaru Murata from Japan. With more experience at the international level and huge cheers from the home crowd, the Thai boxer took victory with the final score of 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28.
In the bantamweight bout (56 kg) between Yuki Yamauchi, Japanese competitor and Minggong Wei from China. Although Yuki Yamauchi, the Japanese fighter stood his ground in the blue corner against Minggong Wei from China. The Japanese fighter bravely chased his opponent throwing more punches delivering a TKO, and quickly notched up the victory right before the first round’s bell.
The last highlight of the day was the middleweight bout (75 kg) between Timo Rost from Germany and Rakhat Marzhikpayev from Kazakhstan. In the first round, Marzhikpayev scored the first hit, whereas Rost with longer range punches, kept the distance waiting to make counterattack. This tactic led him to get higher scores. In the following round, though Rost seemed to put more pressure on his opponent, Marzhikpayev turned out to land more punches. For all that, Rost lost to the fighter from Kazakhstan with the final score of 2-1.
