7th WUC Boxing – Day 5

CHIANG MAI – The heat was on the semi-finals and finals of the 7th World University Boxing Championship 2016. The first highlight of the fifth day was women’s lightweight bout (57-60 kg) between Ratchadaporn Saotao from Thailand in the red corner and Natalia Shadrina from Russia in the blue corner. They heated up the match with fierce punch trading in the first round. As they both stepping up to each other with aggressive fists, and this raised huge cheers from the crowd. Thai fighter, finally, took the victory and won the gold medal.

Kazakhstan’s Ali Akhmedov, the heavyweight fighter in the red corner fought against Ukë Smajli, the Swiss boxer in the blue corner. They both burst in on each other, and viciously traded fists. It turned out that Ali could defeat the Swiss with his precise punches taking the obvious victory with the final of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 heading to the finals.

Another heated fight in the semi-finals was the bantamweight bout between Thai’s Yuttapong Tongdee in the red corner and Japan’s Yuki Yamauchi in the blue corner.

After the first round’s bell, they both rushed in, but the Japanese could pick the Thai off from range. Thai boxer with more agility employed swift footwork determining to score points. In the third round, both fighters still standing their ground against one another, but Yamauchi, at last, lost on points and Tongdee took the victory and gold medal of the class.

The heat was still on the last final fight. It was the men’s heavy (91 kg) between Russia fighter—Zaitcev Anton in the red corner and Bregeon Dylan from France in the blue corner. Both boxers gave a classy performance with very accurate attacks. The Russian scored more points in the first round. The French then geared up throwing more successful punches, so he edged out the Russian. The last bit of the final round was full with fierce punch trading, but Zaitcev managed to slug it out. Dylan, consequently, lost on points to Zaitcev with the score of 2-1, becoming the champion of the men’s heavy category (91 kg).
