ALMATY – Today, 24 January, 5 days prior to the Opening Ceremony of the 28th Winter Universiade, the Athletes’ Village in Almaty opened its door to the delegations arriving from all over the world.
The Athletes’ Village consists of 14 buildings and 3 blocks placed in the form of letter ‘U’, referring to ‘Universiade’. According to architectural idea, all objects form an image of the sun god known from the ancient rock paintings.
The main administrative centre is located between 14-storey residential buildings which includes the operational block where during the Universiade a FISU office, a dining room for 1,000 persons will be located. It will also include Museum of traditional musical instruments with the use of interactive technologies.
Within the different buildings adjacent to the main building de temporary residents of the Athletes’ Village will find a supermarket, a fitness centre with the latest equipment and a swimming pool, a beauty salon, and several shops with traditional Kazakh souvenirs and Universiade merchandizing. In front of the main building is a square with a podium where cultural performances will take place.
The Village has a capacity for 5,000 persons and covers a total area of 24.41 ha with a total built-up area of 23,977.66m². After the games it will become a housing project, a great legacy of the Universiade.
The Athletes’ Village is located in the Alatau district, on Momyshuly Avenue and Northern Ryskulova Street. Adjacent to the Village is the Almaty Arena which will host the Opening Ceremony.
