Government commits 14 million Swiss francs for the organisation of the 2021 Winter Universiade – more than originally expected
BERN — When the Swiss National Council voted 40-1 to strengthen the support to the three international sporting events Switzerland will host in 2020 and 2021, government leaders made a statement: sport has an important role in society.
With Lucerne hosting the 2021 Winter Universiade, both for the athletes coming to compete and the communities hosting these events in Central Switzerland directly benefit from today’s decision.
In addition to the 30th Winter Universiade, Switzerland is set to host both the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne and the Ice Hockey World Championships staged in Zürich in 2020.
For Switzerland, today’s vote means that the 14 million Swiss francs have been committed by the Swiss Federation for the organisation of the Winter Universiade, more than originally expected. Understandably, this left Lucerne 2021 Managing DIrector Urs Hunkeler very happy about the news.
“This result shows a strong commitment towards our project on a national level and highlights the importance of events like the Winter Universiade,” Mr. Hunkeler said.
The Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade will bring together the world’s finest winter sports student-athletes to the Central Switzerland hub from the 21-31 January 2021
