Former Universiade athlete wins gold at the Commonwealth Games

Nigeria’s Oluwatobiloba Amusan on the 13th of April won gold in the women’s 100m hurdles clocking 12.68 Seconds at the Commonwealth Games in Australia. Amusan, who is a student of University of Texas at El Paso in the United States of America and studies human movement studies, made history as she became the first Nigerian female hurdler to win gold at the Games. Her winning time was just 3/100ths of a second shy of the Games record set by Jamaica’s Brigitte Foster-Hylton in 2006.

She also picked up a Bronze medal in the 4×100 relay a few hours after her triumphant gold medal performance.

Derek Abrefa is another former Universiade athlete who was impressive at the Commonwealth Games. He featured for Ghana in the men’s singles table tennis event. Though he was knocked out in the quarter final stage by English number one Liam Pitchforks, he showed a level of growth in his game as the event amongst the Commonwealth countries provided a great test in the career of the young athlete from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana.
