KRASNOYARSK, RUSSIAN FEDARATION – Few things are more iconic than a gold medal. “Going for the gold!” is both a mantra and mindset that reverberates both inside and outside the sports arena.
When it comes to the Summer and Winter Universiades, getting the right distinctive look for the gold, silver and bronze medal winners is a way to honour that competitive exploits of the athletes – and to play homage to the host city’s landmarks and cultural roots.
For the 29th Winter Universiade, organisers in Krasnoyarsk decided the design of the medals should follow the same rigors at the sports competititions coming to town from the 2-12 March with an open contest for the Universiade awarding sets.
The Russian aluminum company RUSAL was determined to be the champion for the prizewinners of the Winter Universiade 2019. The body of the medals will be made of innovative high-strength aluminium alloys, which will then be covered with gold and silver, or bronze.
Considering the Siberian climate, the designers left nothing to chance and incorporated a special technology to ensure the best durability of the medals. In total, over 1,400 awarding and gift medals will be manufactured, as well as over 1,400 awarding badges.
During the Winter Universiade, athletes will compete for 76 awarding sets in 11 sports: biathlon, alpine skiing, curling, cross-country skiing, snowboard, ski orienteering, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, bandy and short track speed skating. In total, over 1,400 awarding and gift medals will be manufactured, as well as over 1,400 awarding badges. The design of the medals is divine, but to earn the right to have one placed around your neck on the Winter Universiade 2019 medal stand is even better.
To the podium placers belong the gold, silver and bronze!
