Japan emerge strong in men’s and women’s competition
GOIANIA — As the FISU World University Wrestling Championship continues at the Rio Vermelho gymnasium, the second day of competition yielded fierce duels and presented the first champions. After 96 bouts since the start of the WUC Wrestling, Japan and Turkey emerged as big winners, with many of their athletes finishing on the podium.
In the men’s -57 kg category, Japan’s Hudai Fujita won gold, beating Canadian Samuel Jagas. The -65 kg category also went to Japan with Key Yonezawa getting past Turkey’s Selim Kozan.
In the higher weight categories though, it was Turkey’s turn to take gold. Muhammet Akdenis, Osman Gocen and Mustafa Sessiz swept the -74 kg, -86 kg and -92 kg categories, bringing in 3 gold medals for Turkey.
Day 2 also marked the beginning of the women’s competition, with 16 bouts contested in the categories -55kg, -62kg and -72kg of freestyle.
Japan once again dominated, closely matched by Germany, with most of their wrestlers entering the final bouts of their weight categories.
Seven more women’s weight categories continue on the third day of competition, as well as many medal rounds for the men. The championship continues until September 9 and the entrance is free.
