Turkey also finishes on podium
GOIANIA — Turkey may have dominated the men’s lighter weight categories at the FISU World University Wrestling Championship in Brazil, but as the competition progresses, the top two positions are almost exclusively split between Russia and Japan.
Four categories of the men’s freestyle wrestling were contested on the third day, with world university champions crowned in -61kg, -70kg, -79kg and -97kg.
In the -70 kg category, the title bout took place between Japan’s Kirin Kinoshida and Russia’s Murad Nukhadiev, with the Japanes coming out on top. But it was the Hungarian László Gergely, who took bronze in the same category, who seemed to be happiest with this medal.
Holding the medal to his chest, he said, “It means a lot to me. Wrestling started as a hobby and it is an honour to be competing here in Brazil and to share the podium with such strong athletes, whom we’ll probably see in the Olympics in a few years. ”
Japan, Turkey and Russia received a trophy for the performance of their athletes in the men’s freestyle and were named the best delegations. The men return to competition with the Greco-Roman style. The World University Wrestling Championship runs until September 9 at the Rio Vermelho gymnasium.
