Athletes from 58 countries are participating in the 2019 Winter Universiade. To make the people from all those nations aware of the games and their favorite athletes, there is an equally-impressive number of media people working day and night here in Krasnoyarsk. In all, over 1,000 members of the media from all over the world are on site to cover the biennial event.

Daichi Kise, who works for Japanese news agency GG Press, came with the athletes of Japan to cover the games.

“This is my second time in Russia. I also came for the FIFA World Cup. I am enjoying Russia,” he said.

Since winter sports are only slowly getting bigger in Japan, Daichi’s expectations from Japanese athletes in Krasnoyarsk are realistic. “Winter sports are not that great in Japan yet. This is a tough competition, so I am not expecting many more medals.”

Another young reporter from China, Zhou Quan, who works for China Central Television, has a similar experience at the Universiade. She says that it’s challenging to cover multisport events but fun at the same time.

“This is my first time covering international games. It took me a few days to get adapted to the pace of the games, but now I am enjoying it. The only challenge is there are so many venues and events happening at the same time, I have to cover those events which are important to my audience at home.”

The 1,000-plus media people in Krasnoyarsk include photographers, writers, reporters, broadcasters, and many more. Thanks to them, fans from all over the world get to enjoy the Winter Universiade from the comfort of their home.
