The all-important draw for the teams sports takes place on Thursday, 4 April
NAPOLI, 3 April — The final pieces of the puzzle will fall into place on Thursday, 4 April as the team draws are held at the Stazione Marittima in Naples, Italy, the host city of the 30th Summer Universiade. The detailed calendar of competitions of the 18 sports disciplines will become clear as the draws are held for the women’s and men’s tournaments in: Football, Water Polo, Basketball, Rugby Sevens and Volleyball.
The team draws will mark the the final session of the Heads of Delegations meeting that has been in progress since Monday, 1 April. Representatives from about 50 countries are currently in Naples to inspect the sports facilities and the villages of the Universiade that starts on 3 July 2019.
Starting at 13:30 (CET), at the Stazione Marittima in Naples, FISU Secretary General-CEO Eric Saintrond will direct the draw operations. The combinations that emerge from the crystal bowls will then be illustrated on large displays for all to see.
The teams are first divided into tiers (or levels) based on their previous Universiade results, FISU rankings and also the ranking of the International Federation governing that sport. For example in Volleyball, FIVB rankings have been taken into account. Teams drawn by tiers are then allocated to different Pools, to ensure a fair distribution.
A number of celebrated Italian athletes are expected to participate in the draw ceremony. For women’s basketball, it is likely to be Mabel Bocchi, with over 120 appearances in the senior national team. For women’s football there will be Valeria Pirone, Chievo Verona and Italian national striker. In men’s football Naples goalkeeper and the Italian Under-21 national team member, Alex Meret, will do the honours. The men’s volleyball draw will see the involvement of former world champion (1994) Giacomo Giretto.
