NAPOLI, 9 July – Shooting Sports at Napoli 2019 concluded at Mostra d’Oltremare as Chinese Taipei won the gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team. Team Korea missed out on the gold by a whisker – just 0.2 difference – and settled for silver. In the bronze medal match, host Italy beat India as 16-12.
As per the rules of 10m Air Pistol, the first team to get to 16 points wins the game.
In the finals between Chinese Taipei and Korea, the mens 10m Air Rifle individual gold medallist Hajun Park was part of the Korean Team. For Taipei, they were led by returning athlete Guo Kuan-ting who had not met his expectations in Gwangju.
“It is so different, the feeling I have for my two Universiades. I didn’t have good results in Gwangju 2013. But in Naples, I won gold. I feel great about that, and I will give 100 points to my performance in this competition.”
“To be honest, when I was on the field of play, I didn’t think about our opponents. I just wanted to beat myself and get the desired results,” Yu Ai-wen of Team Chinese Taipei said. “This gold came so suddenly.”
“We must now share the good news with our family and our friends, who have helped us so much. And we must to appreciate all the coaches and officials who have helped us in this competition,” Yu continued.
Guo Kuan-ting concluded by saying, “Naples has beautiful scenery. The Universiade is a good opportunity for us to get to know about more cultures from all over the world.”
With that, Shooting Sports at the 30th Summer Universiade came to a close and Chinese Taipei ended up being the most successful country.

NAPOLI – There were several dramatic, nail-biting moments at Pavilion 3 in Mostra d’Oltremare as the final round of the 10m air rifle mixed team event took place. It was a duo from Iran that clinched gold, followed by Republic of Korea with silver, and Russia with bronze.
“It was very amazing and scary for the last shot,” said 23-year-old Iranian student athlete Najmeh Khedmati. She and her teammate Mahyar Sedaghat won the close shoot-off against their Korean rivals, Jiwoo Seo and Taeyun Nam, 16-14.
The rule of the final rounds is for the two teams to compare their score after each shot. The team with the higher score wins two points, and it is one point each if it is a draw. The team that gets to 16 points first wins the game.
The first eight shots were neck and neck, and it was only in the ninth round that team Iran took the lead. Korea then levelled things up again after the twelfth shot. During the final rounds, athletes from both teams had some trouble with misalignment, but it was the Iranian athletes who seemed to have better control of the last few shots. They successfully ended the game with their fifteenth shot.
“This match was between two of the best teams, so of course we were nervous,” Sedaghat said later. “But I think it is very important to control yourself, to compete with yourself, and to stay focused during the competition.”
As for the silver medal winner, Jiwoo Seo, she said she was satisfied with the result. “I did my best. Even though we did not win the gold, I am still happy with our performance.”
The bronze medal match was a tight game too. The two teams, China and Russia, were even until the fifth shot, when China took a small lead. But by the ninth shot, Russia took control and, on the thirteenth shot it was 14:12 in their favour. Finally, Russia ended the match with their fifteenth shot, with the final result 17-13.
The last day of sport shooting at the 30thUniversiade is 9 July, with the final of 10m Air Pistol mixed team.

NAPOLI, 6 July – With two golds and one silver medal, the Chinese Taipei delegation athletes were the biggest winner in Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade trap shooting discipline. With Italy also a formidable challenger in the shooting sport, its little wonder why the host country proposed for the sport’s inclusion in this edition of the event. The Italian sport shooters rewarded this opportunity with both a gold and silver medal in the trap shooting discipline.
During the Trap Mixed final at ASD Tiro a Volo Zaino, team Chinese Taipei’s Wan-yu LIU and Kun-pi YANG posted the morning round’s high score of 149, just one point away from full mark.
In the final, however, the Italian duo of Simone D’Ambrosio and Fiammetta Rossi came out on top, 42-36 over the Chinese Taipei team.
“To be honest, I am quite disappointed,” Chinese Taipei’s Liu said. “I didn’t adjust my mind and my tempo well in the gold medal match. The gold medal could be ours, but I missed it..”
Liu and Yang’s silver follows after the Chinese Taipei captured the gold medal in yesterday’s individual trap shooting competition, the first victory in this event in the delegation’s history. The Chinese Taipei duo were hoping to win another gold medal for their team, but the silver medal in trap mixed is still the best in team history.
“The gold medal in women’s trap shooting is my first medal in Universide, and also my first medal for international competition, I am very touched by it.” the 24- year old Liu said. “I have learned a lot from this year’s Universiade. I gained more confident, and I realized that I am able to perform with full score.”
Liu made 75 successive shots during the event’s qualification round, a personal best performance. After this competition, LIU is aiming for the ISSF World Cup Shotgun in Finland in August, hoping to win the ticket for Tokyo 2020.

Meanwhile, in the final of men’s 10m Air Rifle it was not just a competition of shooting skills, but composure too. Before the final shot, Patrik Jany from Slovakia was just 0.1 point ahead of his rival Hajun Park from Republic of Korea. The duel between the two, was exciting for all the spectators at Pav.3 in Mostra d’Oltremare.
“The last was pretty stressful for me, because I knew I had just 0.1 advantage,” said the 22 year old gold medal winner Jany. “At that time I just tried to do what I know best and then I felt confident.”
For the final shot, Jany got 10.1, and Park ended with 9.3. “Actually, I didn’t handle it well, I was just 10.1, it was like a mistake for me,” Jany continued. “The Korean guy shot 9.3, that is not a strong shot in rifle, so I think he gave me the medal.” Jany’s total score was 249.2, breaking the Universiade record set by Chinese athlete Zhiguo LIU.
Speaking of the last shot, the 19 year old Korean Park said he was very nervous at that moment. “I couldn’t even breathe” he said. Unlike Jany who has several experiences in the past with such a close duel, this was Park’s first time encountering such a situation. “I was really nervous, and I tried to breathe.”
Bronze medalist, Russia’s Evgenii Panchenko broke the Universiade qualification record with a stunning 630.1. The previous record was set by Russian athlete Nazar Luginets.
The shooting competition continues on 7 July with women’s 10m air pistol and mixed 10m air rifle.

NAPOLI, 5 July – South Korea’s Park Dae-hun added to his ever-growing shooting resume on Friday as he cruised to an impressive gold-medal performance in men’s 10m air pistol at Mostra d’Oltremare.
It marked the second Summer Universiade triumph for the 23-year-old, who prevailed on home soil in 50m pistol at Gwangju 2015. The sport was not part of the FISU Games program two years ago in Taipei.
Park, the current world No. 11 and a 50m team pistol gold medallist at the 2018 ISSF world championships, dominated from start to finish in his first event of Napoli 2019. Seeded first after the qualifying phase thanks to a score of 581, five points better than his closest competitors, he shot a Universiade-record 243.8 in the final to distance silver medallist Zhang Bowen of China (238.5) and bronze winner Sajad Poorhosseini Lafmejani of Iran (216.6).
Holding an insurmountable 6.4-point lead before his final shot, Park closed out the contest with a solid, if unspectacular, 9.8. Zhang responded with a perfect 10.9 on his final attempt but it still proved too little, too late.
“I’m very happy with my performance. It’s an individual event but it was really a team effort. I want to thank our entire staff and our coaches for helping me achieve this result,” said Park. “My gold medal in 2015 was of course very special because the Universiade were in my home country. But this win feels just as good.”
Zhang, who was seeded fifth heading into the final after scoring 575 in the preliminaries, was visibly dissatisfied despite his silver-medal effort.
“I’m disappointed. I could have done better. I made a few mistakes in the final and it proved costly,” said the former world No. 5 and World Cup champion, referring, among others, to a 9.1 on his second-to-last shot.
While Zhang couldn’t hide his disappointment, Poorhosseini Lafmejani was still beaming a long time after he stepped off the podium.
“This is only my third international competition, so winning a medal of any colour feels amazing. I’m just really, really happy,” said the 20-year-old, who started his shooting career a mere five years ago.
The shooting competition at Mostra d’Oltremare resumes Saturday with the men’s 10m air rifle.
