7 December 2020

TURIN, ITALY— The city of Turin, Italy holds great meaning for the University Sport Movement and was the birthplace of the FISU World University Games in 1959. Since then, Italy has hosted four summer and six winter editions of the FISU World University Games.

With hopes of bringing the Games back to the city of Turin since the winter edition in 2007, a protocol agreement pertaining to the establishment of the Organising Committee for the bid of the Turin and Piedmont 2025 FISU World University Games Winter was made.

Bringing the Games back to the city of Turin is something that the Italian University Sport Centre (CUSI) also takes great pride in, as mentioned by Riccardo D’Elicio, President of the University Sport Center of Turin.

“Today the dream of bringing back the FISU World University Games to Turin, officially begins,” he said.

“Sport is a means of culture and education, and the FISU World University Games are a perfect example. Turin is the city that gave birth to this event in 1959 and a great number of university students will be able to grow and excel thanks to these kinds of events.”

The journey to assembling such a bid comes with a strong union between various organisations such as Regione Piemonte, Città di Torino, UNITO, POLITO, Università del Piemonte Orientale, EDISU Piemonte, University Sports Centre (CUS) Piemonte and CUS Turin.

As a result, the agreement was also signed by the following:

  • Fabrizio Ricca, Councilor of Sport of Regione Piemonte,

  • Antonio Iaria, Councilor of City Planning of Città di Torino,

  • Stefano Geuna, Chancellor of the University of Turin,

  • Guido Saracco, Chancellor of the Polytechnic University of Turin,

  • Gian Carlo Avanzi, Chancellor of the University of Eastern Piedmont,

  • Alessandro Ciro Sciretti, President EDISU Piemonte,

  • Riccardo D’Elicio, President of the University Sport Center of Turin and CUS Piemonte.

With hopes to serve the student community at large, Riccardo D’Elicio also mentioned the importance of hosting the Games for the region of Turin.

“The services, in particular the student residences, will be key for the growth of the Turin university system. Today, students choose the city where they will attend university on the grounds on what that city offers in terms of services,” he explained.

“The 2025 FISU World University Games will be a great chance to redevelop our territory and make it even more tailored for students.”

The final bid dossier will officially be submitted by CUSI to FISU by the end of December 2020, after which FISU will begin its official evaluation for the event attribution.
