First-time virtual seminar for the FISU World University Championships and FISU University World Cups Organising Committees

Throughout last week, FISU successfully delivered its first-time virtual seminar for the Organising Committees (OC) of the 2022 and 2024 FISU World University Championships and FISU University World Cups. In addition to the OCs from all around the globe, FISU Technical Committee Chairs and members of staff also attended the online meeting, resulting in a participation of more than 100 people per session.

Over the course of the five days, some of the more experienced participants were able to share their valuable insight with the other organisers, which added an extra dimension to the transfer of knowledge.

The intervention of Ivana Anicic, organiser of the 2018 FISU World University Championship Handball in Rijeka, was particularly appreciated by the participants. Her presentation, intitled “The Story of an OC”, gave a more hands-on description of the experience and what is to be expected when organising such events.

“It was our first time organising this seminar virtually, it will not replace face-to-face meetings, but we have received some really good feedbacks that will help us to further develop that seminar in the future” said Julien Carrel, FISU World University Championships Manager.

During the week-long webinar, the various presentations addressed aspects that organising committees will have to tackle when organising their event. From services and protocol, to the sport itself, marketing, media and finance, as well as other subjects like medical and anti-doping, the adaptation to the pandemic situation, and FISU non sport activities, the OCs were equipped with the theoretical knowledge needed to plan out their respective FISU Championships and FISU World Cups.

“This seminar is a very good and effective tool, not only to deliver the necessary guidelines and regulations but also to encourage the exchange of communication between the various OC’s and FISU as well as among the OC’s themselves. It is a great “kick off” about one year prior to the respective event which helps every OC to channel their already invested efforts and collected information into the right direction and gives a kind of boost to enjoy working for all of our common goals, to deliver a successful event” says Gernot Hupfauf, General Manager of the 2022 World University Championship Sport Climbing in Innsbruck (AUT).

FISU will continue to work closely with the Organising Committees scattered around the world, to make sure that the events are held to a standard representative of the International University Sports Federation and the hard work put in by all the participants and organisers of these great events.
