The Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade has taken yet another international design top honour since its last awarding in 2019, this year awarded by the iF International Design Awards 2021. These prestigious awards are handed out by the iF World Design Guide that not only supports and promotes good designs, but also raises awareness about designs, while using design as a tool for social change and supporting young talent.
Winning in the discipline of communication, the specific areas the 29th Winter Universiade that were praised included the development of the concept and visual style of the Universiade, U-Laika the mascot, the torch and cauldron for the flame, medal design, along with the design of sports equipment and public displays.
Together with the Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade designed by ArtStyle headquartered in Krasnoyarsk, the winners in the same discipline of the communication award category included BMW, Samsung, Hyundai, Huawei and other big players in the corporate world. A big win for the legacy of the Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, the design went up against 10,000 applications from 52 countries worldwide that were also submitted to the iF Design Award 2021 contest.
“The event design for the 29th Winter Universiade Games 2019 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, combines the principle of harsh Siberian nature with one of the ‘warmth of human hearts’. The graphics symbolise both movement in sports and the dynamic elements of Siberian nature, such as wind, ice and the powerful Yenisey River. The identity, the U-Laika mascot, uniforms, small architectural forms, the Universiade cauldron, torch and awarding ceremony were all developed as part of a unified concept, REAL WINTER. The medals were constructed of an innovative aluminum alloy with precious metals in combination with Swarovski crystals.”—
