Great success for University of Coimbra’s first edition of Sports Week

University of Coimbra's first Sports Week was a huge success.

The inaugural UC Sports Week, held from 8-14 April marked a triumphant celebration of athleticism and collaboration across this FISU Healthy Campus Platinum University.

Hosted by Desporto UC, the University of Coimbra (UC) seized the opportunity to pioneer a week-long event dedicated to the promotion of sports and its manifold benefits. The initiative aimed to extend the reach of sports throughout the various departments and services of UC, intertwining it with diverse areas of knowledge.

The festivities kicked off on the Monday with a momentous press conference heralding the event’s commencement. Notable figures such as the Magnificent Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão, and esteemed representatives from the academic and municipal spheres graced the occasion. Simultaneously, Polo II buzzed with intellectual fervor as researchers showcased their innovative projects at a conference and practical exhibition focusing on Technology in Sports.

Everyone was eager to take part including representatives of the Student Union, FADU President, the University of Coimbra Rector as well as the city’s mayor.

Tuesday witnessed Polo III as the epicenter of captivating discussions, featuring round tables on topics ranging from UC student-athletes’ participation in the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024 to the indispensable role of medical teams in major sporting events. The engagements, moderated by renowned personalities, underscored the intersection of sports with academia and professional practice.

Midweek, the excitement escalated as AAC/UC teams destined for the Final Stages of the 2024 National University Championships in Aveiro received a spirited send-off. The day also saw the launch of the Sustainable Mobility Challenge, advocating for eco-friendly transportation solutions within the UC community.

Thursday unfolded with the debut of the UC Sport Talks Episode, showcasing the experiences of student-athletes and their journey within the UC High Income Support Program. The day culminated with an invigorating open class of functional training, reinforcing the ethos of holistic well-being.

Mental health advocacy

Friday’s focus shifted towards mental health advocacy, culminating in the launch of the Healthy Campus UC Campaign. Through an array of engaging initiatives disseminated via social media and university services, the campaign aimed to raise awareness and foster a supportive campus environment.

The “Ucicletas” route united participants from all sectors of UC life.

The week culminated in grandeur with a cycling event, the “UCicletas” Route on Sunday, April 14th, uniting participants from all walks of UC life in a scenic cycling tour across the university centers and iconic landmarks of Coimbra. The event exemplified the collective commitment towards sustainable mobility and personal well-being.

Reflecting on the resounding success of the inaugural UC Sports Week, Pro-Rector Filipa Godinho expressed satisfaction with the event’s outcomes. Emphasising the spirit of innovation and camaraderie that permeated the week’s activities, she underscored the University’s ongoing dedication to fostering a vibrant and inclusive sports culture.
