FISU President Receives Gift from Canadian Minister of State (Sport)

At the Canada Night, a cultural evening organized by the Canadian delegation here in Harbin, Mr. Killian received a Team Canada Hockey jersey, signed by ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, out of hands of Minister of State (Sport) Gary Lunn.

At the same time Canada’s Chef-de-Mission, Peter Baxter, announced the selection of hockey player Cathy Chartrand of McGill University as Team Canada’s flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony of the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China.

A second-year physical education student at McGill University in Montréal, Chartrand is enjoying another standout campaign for the undefeated Martlets, who have topped the CIS rankings all season after capturing the first national title in program history in 2007-08. An assistant captain for the McGill Marlets, Chartrand sits fourth in QSSF scoring and leads all Quebec defenders with nine goals and 20 points in 14 conference games, one year after being named tournament MVP of the CIS championship.

The choice for this athlete is almost symbolic, hockey is Canada’s game and Women’s ice hockey will make its Universiade debut in Harbin. The six-team tournament will be played between host China, Canada, Finland, Japan, Slovakia and Great Britain.
