Round-up Ice Hockey Tournament – Day 3

20 February 2009

 GBR vs. KAZ

Today, February 20th, at the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China, the women had a practice day, while the men’s teams played their third day of competitions.

Men

KAZ – GBR 8-0 (4-0, 1-0, 3-0)
Great Britain participated for the first time in the ice hockey tournament at the 2007 WU in Torino and ended last. Two years later it’s clearly they progressed and iced a better and stronger team her in Harbin. However, Kazan was clearly their superior scoring eight times on their goalie.

CAN – CHN 13-0 (2-0, 8-0, 3-0)
Host China, clearly motivated by the near capacity crowd of 2,200 at the Skating Gym of the Heiljongjang Institute for Physical Education, could withhold most of the attacks of title defender Canada only allowing two goals in the first period. However, they slacked in the second and the Canadians took advantage of their weakness and lit the backlight eight times. In the last period the Canucks drilled another three past goalie Xie Ming.

SVK – KOR 4-2 (3-1, 1-1, 0-0)
A tight became between Slovakia and Korea, the Slovaks had to pull all strings to withhold their lead. With a comfortable 3-0 on the boards, the attention of the Slovaks slacked and hardly 10 seconds before the end of the first period Korea scored their first goal via Sin. The second period the Koreans equaled their score for the period 1-1. The last period both teams shut their zone-off as no goals were scored ending in a 4-2 victory for Slovakia.

RUS – JPN 12-0 (2-0, 6-0, 4-0)
No comment for Game 8 in the men’s tournament. Powerhouse Russia is traditionally a contender for the gold medal game and they proved it once again beating the Japanese 12to 0.
