Women’s Aerials in Yabuli

22 February 2009

And the winner is… the wind!

It was simply impossible today to set up both men and women super G competitions because of the strong wind conditions above the Yabuli slopes. The nordic combined for teams had to be canceled also. These competitions will be held tomorrow together with the K125, the pursuit event in cross country and the freestyle men’s aerials. That means that Monday will be a very busy day in Yabuli.
Anyway, all the spectators came on today’s spot: the venue for the aerials. Indeed, for the first time in the Universiade history, freestyle skiing was held in Yabuli. Women’s Aerials is a very spectacular discipline and the observers were happy to enjoy this fantastic show broadcasted live on TV.
Only five competitors were registered for this event. We had four jumpers from China and one from Belarus. Freestyle skiing was chosen by the Chinese organizers to be part of the optional sport program of our 24th Winter Universiade and it was not by hazard. Indeed, aerials are very popular in China and this nation count a lot of great competitors.
Nina Li who won the gold medal is one of these. She made two superb jumps without any mistake. Because of the windy conditions, the jumpers choose the simple way and did not show too many difficulties, so, no triples, but well done doubles.
Shuang Cheng, also from China finished second. She was a bit weaker than Nina but she made two superb jumps anyway.
Finally, Shuangfei Dai signed for the bronze medal. This was a fantastic result for the host country.
Let’s see what will happen tomorrow with the men’s event.

President of FISU, M. George E. Killian who came in Yabuli this afternoon was very pleased to give the medals to these three Chinese girls.
