Bronze Medal Game – SVK – FIN 2-3 (0-1, 1-1, 1-1)
It has been a long and tiresome tournament and it showed. Slovakia and Finland played a last tight game to get the medal at stake. Team Suomi started off with a lead in the first via Jalosuo. Hardly 28 seconds in the second period Rajahuhta puts in a second. However, in the same minute Culikova scores the first goal for Slovakia. Within the second minute of the last period, Korhonen scores the third goal for Finland. The game tenses up and players from both sides pay regular visits to the penalty box. With one minute to go the Slovaks collect on the powerplay and score via Velickova. They try to push the game into overtime, but don’t succeed. Finland takes home the very first bronze medal for Women’s Ice Hockey at the Winter Universiade.
Gold Medal Game – CAN – CHN 3-1 (1-0, 1-1, 1-0)
It was a grand finale for the inaugural Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament at the Winter Universiade. Canada and China gave their best in front of a capacity crowd of 5,700 hockey enthusiasts. It was Chartrand who opened the score of the game putting a one on the scoreboard for Canada at the end of the first period. When Ironside goes into penalty box hardly 20 second into the second period, China uses its powerplay well and Jin scores the equalizer. Halfway the period, Unruh scores the second goal for the Canadians. In the last period, the Chinese try to beat Goalie Corfield, but in vain, she stays firm between the pipes. When Tan receives a penalty for roughing, Canada collects on the powerplay via Reeve who scores the last goal of the women’s tournament. Canada wins the inaugural gold!
Men – Semi-Finals
RUS – KAZ 7-1 (1-0, 3-0, 3-1)
While the Women had their medal games today, the men played their semi-finals. Russia overpowered Kazakhstan and got itself a ticket for the finals.
CAN – SVK 8-1 (3-0, 1-0, 4-1)
Canada totally over-classed Slovakia. The Canadians already scored in the first minute of the game. And from that moment onwards, they kept invading the Slovak goal, hungry for gold. At the end-buzz, the Canadians also had the ticket for the final in their pocket.
Tomorrow we will see a replay of the 2007 WU final: Russia vs. Canada. Kazakhstan and Slovakia will play for the bronze.
