2009 SU Update: Medicine, Sport and Youth at Universiade

13 March 2009

On March 11th and 12th, a scientific conference under the slogan ‘Medicine, Sport and Youth at Universiade’ was hosted by the municipality of Star Grad.
Organizers of the conference were the municipality of Stari Grad, Stari Grad Health Center, Company “Universiade Belgrade 2009” and City Secretariats for Health Care and Sport.

‘The Universiade consists, in fact, of 29 world championships for men and women at which 500 doping tests will be conducted’, said Zoran Jovanovic, Universiade Belgrade 2009 CEO. ‘At the Bangkok Universiade no positive test result was found . That shows that Universiades are free of doping scandals that often cast a shadow on sports events. We hope that Belgrade Universiade will uphold this tradition. Our aim is to reaffirm not only voluntarism, but physical culture as well, because it is of vital importance for a nation’s health.’

Universiade volunteers put a singular mark on the conference. In the spirit of voluntarism, distinguished sports experts, doctors, coaches, managers, and journalists donated their time in preparing the conference ‘Medicine, Sport and Youth at Universiade’.

‘Since it is believed that Belgrade Universiade will attract a record number of participants, this conference’s topic is of great importance. We appreciate the initiative put forward by representatives of Stari Grad Health Center. For years, the municipality of Stari Grad has been helping athletes, sports clubs and organizations of sports events. Sports Center “Milan Gale Muskatirovic”, where an ATP Tournament is to be held in May, will be finished before scheduled time. Their venues will be used in July during the Universiade. Our municipality recognizes the importance of all health initiatives, not only as regards the athletes, but ordinary people too. This is the reason why we agreed to host and sponsor this conference’, said Mirjana Bozidarevic, District Council Chairperson.
