2009 Belgrade Universiade Flag on the Highest Peak in the World

27 March 2009

Božidar Djelić, president of Universiade Belgrade 2009 OC gave the Universiade flag to Dragan Jaćimović the leader of the expedition „Everest 2009″ to take it on their climb of Mount Everest. ‘It is a great honor for all at the Universiade to have Dragan Jaćimović and his expedition “Everest 2009” take the Universiade flag to the highest peak in the world. That will prove the global nature of the Universiade. We expect guests from over 140 countries and more than ten thousand athletes. The fact that our young mountain climbers will symbolically take the Universiade to the top of the world means that we have an obligation to continue with our efforts and organize this event to the best of our ability’, said Božidar Djelić.

For expedition leader Dragan Jaćimović this is his third climb of Mount Everest. ‘Mount Everest represents the peak in life of every man, but for an athlete, a mountain climber, it is the peak of a career. We hope that this flag will bring positive energy to Belgrade and motivate athletes to achieve great results’, said Dragan Jaćimović.

The flag destined for the world’s highest peak will be returned to Belgrade at the beginning of June. It will be used at the opening ceremony of this year’s Universiade on July 1st.
