2011 WU Update: CSU Visit in Erzurum – Day 2

The second day of the CSU visit in Erzurum, host city of the 2011 Winter Universiade, started with an inspection tour of the Ice and Snow Sports Venues. The FISU delegation observed with satisfaction that all the tenders have been finished and some of the construction works have already started, e.g. for the Ice Stadiums and the Curling venue. The construction of the Athletes’ Village will start soon, according to the responsible persons.

The tree planting ceremonyLater in the morning the Governor of the Erzurum Province, Sami Bulut, joined the FISU Group. Together they participated at a Tree Plant Ceremony. The OC plans to plant exactly 2011 new trees as they also recruit 2011 volunteers. On the hill between the Athletes’ Village and one of the Ice Stadiums, the new Jumping venue “Kiremitliktepe” will be constructed for a total amount of € 27 Mio. On the hillside this new forest will be visible in 2011.

After the visit of the place of the planed Jumping venue the CSU moved to Konakli where the competition for Alpine Skiing will be held. The construction tender for the open sports facilities, buildings and chairlifts were all completed in February and March 2009, the construction work will start soon. Finally Kairis Ulp, Leonz Eder, Marian Dymalski, Roger Roth and Milan Augustin visited Palandöken Mountains, the place where Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing will take place.

In the afternoon the Erzurum OC and the FISU CSU met for a final meeting at the OC Headquarters. A large exchange of information and remarks took place regarding the sport and non-sport venues. They also exchanged the experiences from the Harbin Universiade where a large Turkish delegation was present in order to learn for their own Universiade. Finally the preparation of the next visits of CSU/CTI (October 2009) and the FISU EC (November 2009) were discussed as well as the visits of the International Delegates from the different sports.
