From June 7th to 11th, 2010, the Spanish town of Antequera will host the 13th World University Golf Championship. The town is located some 60 km from Málaga. The University of Málaga is directly involved in the organization of this FISU event and some of the faculties of the University are situated in Antequera.
Mr. Pedro Montiel Gamez is in charge of this WUC and he brings along a lot of experience as the two other WUCs he organized in the past were successful FISU events promoting University Sport.
This Championship will have the support of various authorities of the region. This WUC fits in the 600th anniversary of the return of the town of Antequera to Spain. The town itself has a 2000-year long history and the new golf club wanted to host an international event for its promotion.
The inspection day started with a meeting with the Mayor of Antequera, Mr. Ricardo Millan, who warmly welcomed the FISU delegation which was composed of Mr. Raymond Robinson, Technical Chair for Golf; Mr. Laurent Briel, Director WUC and Mr. Roberto Outeiriño, FISU Honorary Member and in charge of the international relations within the Local Organizing Committee.
During their visit of the town hall, the FISU delegates also met with Mr. Antonio Souviron, in charge of Tourism and Sport for the Autonomous Region of Andalusia, who confirmed his support of the event.
The FISU delegates continued their inspection visiting the Antequera Golf Club, the hotel for the FISU Family and the hotel for the participants. The whole of this complex is owned by Mr. D. Ramon Jimenez, who has turned the place into a genuine golfer’s paradise.
According to the Technical Chair for Golf, who participated at several WUC as a Head of Delegation, the hotels and the catering are high quality as well as the facilities for the athletes. The golf course is quite interesting and will offer a great experience for our student-athletes.
