The 11th World Unviersity Rowing Championship will be hosted in Szeged, Hungary from August 13th to 15th, 2010.
Szeged, the county town of Csongrád County, is in the centre of the South Alföld (Southern Great Plain) Region and will, together with Pécs, be the European Capital of Culture in 2010. It is the largest town in south-eastern Hungary, with 163 thousand inhabitants, and is situated at the confluence of the rivers Tisza and Maros.
Accomodation
The NOVOTEL Hotel will provide accomodation for the “FISU Family” while the athletes are to be housed in the dormitories of the University of Szeged. The dormitories have 1.5-2 bedroom apartments suitable for 3-5 people and are currently being renovated.
Accreditation
Accreditation will take place at the venue of the championship, the Count István Széchenyi Rowing and Kayak-Canoe Olympic Centre. All teams are to be transported to their accomodation by bus; volunteers will be assigned to each national team.
Volunteers will be provided for the FISU guests.
Volunteers
The organizers rely on student involvement: approximately 60-80 student volunteers will take part in the organization. The OC also expect volunteers from the DÉMÁSZ Sports Club: their athletes have already taken part in the organization of several national and international competitions. The selection process for the volunteers has already begun and the person in charge of the volunteers has been named as well.
Transportation
Buses will transport athletes and guests between the venue of the championship and their accomodation. Buses will be provided for teams arriving in Budapest (10 EURO/Person ) for the Budapest-Szeged route, which is 175 kilometers on the M5 Motorway. It is also possible to reach Szeged by train ( Intercity ) from Budapest.
Information & Media
Talks have already been held with various members of the local media: Rádió 88, Szegedi Városi Televízió (local TV Station) and Délmagyarország. The national sports newspaper, Nemzeti Sport will report on the event and the following TV stations will air broadcasts: MTV Sporthíradó and Sport1 TV. A daily paper with the title “Rowing News” will be published during the championship.
Sports & Technical Facilities
The 11th World University Rowing Championship is to be held at the Count István Széchenyi Rowing and Kayak-Canoe Olympic Centre, which served as the scene of several international competitions in the past. In preparation for the competition the course is currently being widened from 6 to 8 lanes. In accordance with the international regulations the supporting technical facilities (storage, sound, time-keeping, award ceremonies) are being upgraded as well.
