2010 WUC Badminton Update

From September 7th to 12th, Taipei City, the capital of Chinese Taipei will host the 2010 World University Badminton Championship. 2010 will be a busy year for the Chinese Taipei University Sport Federation as the FISU Member Association will stage two other WUC as well, i.e. bridge (Kaoshiung) and weightlifting (Taichung). Hereafter you will find an update regarding the preparations of the WUC Badminton.

ATHLETES’ VILLAGE

Accommodation

Hondo Waikoloa Hotel is proposed to be the Athletes’ Village providing housing for athletes and team officials of the 2010 World University Badminton Championship.

Rooms will be assigned to different delegations taking into consideration their nationalities, religion, and cultural background. Housekeeping staff will clean each room every day and washing machines and dryers will be provided to participants to wash their clothes. A first-aid and medical staff will be on-hand 24 hours a day in the Athletes’ Village to take care of any emergency or need for medical care.

Catering

The restaurant at Hondo Waikoloa Hotel will provide the meal service for the competitors and officials. Meal periods can be flexible according to competition schedule. A variety of food selections will be offered, including Chinese, Japanese and Western style.

Facilities

The Athletes’ Village will have the following services:

• Computers with access to the internet;

• Fitness room for exercising;

• Convenience Store for drinks, food, everyday utility stuff;

• Information Desk;

• Transportation Desk (for trips to the airport, sightseeing places, and Taipei City)

• Café for coffee, drinks, or tea.

Reception

There will be an information desk stationed by reception staff workers who are able to answer any question and help solve any problem that participants may have.

GENERAL ORGANIZATION

VIPs Accommodation

FISU VIPs, committee members, and guests will be housed at Howard Plaza Hotel. Howard Plaza Hotel is approximately a 15-minutes drive from the competition site.

Judges Accommodation

Judges will be accommodated at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel. Sunworld Dynasty Hotel is approximately a 10-minutes walk from the competition site.

Accreditation

Accreditation centers will be set up at the Athletes’ Village for participants, members of the press, and at Hotel for VIPs, committee members, and guests. The delegations will be requested to bring their own photographs with them. If the participants will not have the photographs with them, their photographs will be taken on site. The accreditation card will be produced on the computer after CIC control. All delegations will be required to use and show their accreditation cards to gain access to the Village and competition site.

Transportation

Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is the designated port of entry. A reception team will be set up at the airport to greet all delegations and arrange for transportation to the Athletes’ Village. Bus services will be provided to transport participants between airport and the Athletes’ Village. Since the competition venue and the Athletes’ Village are within walking distance, transportation won’t be needed for the competitors and judges traveling between competition venue and the Villages. Minivans will be used to provide transportation for the VIPs, committee members, and guests.

Security

By combining local police, security units, and volunteers, the Organizing Committee will form a Security Team responsible for security and safety at the competition venues, Athletes’ Village and during all ceremonies and cultural events. Taipei City Government will mobilize its police force to ensure the necessary protection of all delegation members.

Medical Assistance

Sufficient medical assistance will be provided and can be assured for the Championship.

Besides nearby hospitals available for immediate treatment for any injuries, first aid, ambulance and doctors will be kept ready and close by the range during the Championship. Also, first-aid medical staff will be available at the Athletes’ Village and on call 24 hours a day.

Doping Control

The process of doping controls will be assured, with sufficient staff and high-tech equipment from the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee (CTOC), which technicians have performed doping control duties for national and international competitions in Chinese Taipei for years. The CTOC team will be responsible for sample adopting. Its further test will be conducted in Tokyo, Japan.

Media

A Press Center will be set up on the competition site, Taipei City Gymnasium, and there will be sufficient telecommunication and Internet accesses for local and international media members. The daily results of the competitions will be sent to each applicable media outlet, both local and international, by fax and/or email every day during the Championship.

Results will also be posted on the bulletin boards at the Athletes’ Village, as well as on championship website. Three press conferences will be held prior to the Opening Ceremony of the Championship. The first one, about three weeks before the championship, will be held by the Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation to announce the upcoming championship. The second one will be organized by the Taipei City Government to generate local interest and support for the championship. The third one, organized one day before the championship, will be held to introduce the CISCA members and delegation representatives.
