Natal is the host city of the 2009 Brazilian University Karate Championship which started yesterday, Sunday, October 18th. Around 50 athletes from seven states will fight for medals in kumite and kata and also for a chance to get selected for the Brazilian’s team which will participate in the 4th World University Karate Championship that will take place in Podgorica, Montenegro, from July 15th to 18th, 2010.
‘At his tournament we will observe the athletes and evaluate them for the World University Championship next year. It´s gonna be a high level event in Natal’, said Luciano Cabral, CBDU President and FISU Vice-President.
The Brazilian University Karate event is part of the Brazilian Karate Championship program and the University Sports League. The tournament will be staged in the Gymnasium of Sports Humberto Nesi (a.k.a. Machadinho).
The university tournament is divided in two categories: for athletes of 2º Kyu and above, female and male, of kata and kumite individual and for teams, and for athletes until 3º Kyu, also female and male, with rounds of individual kata and kumite.
The rules adopted by the Brazilian Confederation of University Sports (CBDU) for this Brazilian University Karate Championship follow the international regulations of the Word Karate Federation, which are also adopted by FISU for its WUC.
