25 January 2010

They are some of the best university rugby players on the planet and next July they can be found in the city of Oporto. This is the business card for the 4th World University Rugby 7s Championship, a unique competition in Portugal that arrives to Oporto in a University of Porto organization.

Japan, Canada, Australia and South Africa are some of the 36 teams that have guaranteed their presence in the competition. The entry forms for the 4th WUC Rugby Sevens 2010 are closed now and the University of Porto confirms the status of the first institution that can join teams from all around the world.

The South Africa team is the favorite one holding the title of university world champion. But powerful Spain, vice-champion of the world, and Russia will also be in the title race. Portugal, seventh place in the 3th World University Championship, has the home advantage to face the great powers of rugby.

The other surprise is in the women’s competition. This championship will count fifteen teams, something never seen before in a World University Championship. The favorite team is champion Spain, while the Portuguese team will start as an outsider, as it’s its first participation.

Bessa 21st Century Stadium will receive all the teams from July 21st to 24th, 2010. The University of Porto, with FADU and FISU, believes that this will be the best championship ever held in Portugal.
