2013 SU Update: The Rowing Channel Project

In the framework of preparation to the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, the State unitary enterprise “Tatinvestgrazhdanproekt” held a work session to discuss the compliance of the rowing channel blueprint to the requirements of the International Rowing Federation. Apart from the Tatar specialists among the council attendees there were the Event Director of the International Rowing Federation Ms. Svetlana Otzetova and Director of the technical commission of the Russian Rowing Federation Ms. Lyudmila Sarayeva. They visited the construction site of the channel on the Middle Kaban Lake and shaped the plan of further collaboration.

The sports program of the Kazan Universiade will includes rowing and canoe/kayak as one of the many optional sports. To stage these sports Kazan started the construction of the rowing channel with bleachers that will seat 1,500 people. The expected quantity of the rowing and canoe competition participants is 700 to 800 athletes from 30-35 countries. The Universiade will have 14 medal events in rowing and 15 medal events in canoe/kayak racing.

The territory close to the rowing channel will be equipped with boatsheds, an office building with a gym, rowing pools, a residence hall for athletes, a meal station, a roller skiing trail, playgrounds and a recreation area. After the end of the Universiade the rowing channel will become the centre of training of the Russian teams and student teams and will host summit sports competitions.
