Presentation of the 2012 WUC Taekwondo in Korea
VIGO – After a successful World University Taekwondo Championship, it is time to do the maths concerning the medal standings. In total, 84 medals where available in the different categories of poomsae and kyorugy – 40 for women, 40 for men and 4 for mixed pairs.
In the medal standings ranking including male, female and mixed categories of poomsae and kyorugi disciplines, Korea was overwhelmingly dominant leading the overall table by medals, by ranking, in male and female categories.
In the overall medal table, Korea won 18 medals (9 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze), followed by Spain (4-3-4) and Iran (1-4-4). In the medals table, Korea earned 1st spot with its 9 gold medals, with Spain and Chinese Taipei being 2nd and 3rd respectively with 4 gold medals.
Looking at the male competition only, once again Korea was 1st (4-2-2), Spain was 2nd (2-1-2) and Iran was 3rd (1-3-3). In the female competition, Korea took 1st spot (4-3-2) being followed by Chinese Taipei (3-0-2) and Spain (2-1-2).
Statistically, Korea took home 1/5 of the medals at this 11th WUC Taekwondo – an impressive figure if we consider that 39 countries were present at the competition, with 17 of these earning medals. In the 21 medal awarding ceremonies that took place, only 3 times did Korea miss the podium.
With the 12th edition of the World University Taekwondo Championship scheduled for Pocheon in Korea, it will be interesting to see how all other nations will perform.
