28 January 2011

Elena Runggaldier (ITA) jumps to gold

ERZURUM Today, January 28th, the 25th Winter Universiade really took off with student-athletes competing in a wide array of sports. Below an overview of today’s snow sport competitions.

Ski Jumping

For women ski jumpers the Winter Universiade is an important event. Indeed, ski jumping for women is not an Olympic discipline, which makes it that the Winter Universiade is the only major multi-sport event in which they can participate.

FISU added women’s ski jumping at the 23rd Winter Universiade in Innsbruck, Austria in 2005. Today, January 28th, seven competitors entered the field of play.

The Italian girls reigned the podium as gold and bronze went to Elena Runggaldier and Lisa Demetz, while Japanese Yurika Hirayama took the silver.

‘I’m very happy to have won the gold Elena said. The Universiade is a great event and I’m glad I could compete here. It’s a little bit weird to ski jump in Turkey, as I associate it more a beach holiday destination. But it’s a great venue’, a happy Elena added.
