2011 WU Update Day7 – Ice Hockey

ERZURUM As the men finished their preliminary round yesterday, today, February 2nd they had a well-deserved day-off, meaning only the women played today their last day in the preliminaries. As the men had their break, all the women’s games were scheduled in the 3,000-seat arena.

In the first game of the day, the spectators saw a clash between the Old and the New Continent as Great Britain faced-off against USA. Team USA took the lead in the first period with two goals, the first one scored within the first minute of the first period by Winters. Early in the second period GBR tried to get back into the game as Farman drilled the puck past USA goalie Vaughan. However, Team USA retaliated with three goals to end the period with a 4-goals advantage. In the last period Team USA confirmed its domination of the game adding another three goals to the scoreboard, ending the game with an 8-1 victory over Great Britain.

The second game of the day put Slovakia against Finland. The former bronze medallist was no match for the Slovakians and they lost 0-7.

 

The Canadian team formed a lane of honor to escort the Turkish team off the ice

 

The Turkish Women’s Team awaited a courageous battle against medal contender and title holder of the inaugural edition of the women’s ice hockey tournament at the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China. Team Canada which held a straight win record so far was no match for the young Turkish team. However, the game was played in the outmost sportive atmosphere and at the end of the game, after the handshake, the Canadian team formed a lane of honor to escort the Turkish team off the ice, showing their respect for their opponents. An act of true sportsmanship which was very much appreciated by the spectators. It’s what the Universiade is all about…
