ERZURUM – Only men’s ice hockey today, February 3rd, at the 25th Winter Universiade. With the end of the preliminary round the teams entered the qualification round, so six games were played today.
Slovenia had not too much effort to beat Turkey. Although, there was great joy with the Turkish Team as they scored a goal via Elevli in the 14th minute of the first period. However, Team Slovenia beat the hosts 11-1.
ESP vs. KOR
Spain narrowly beat Korea in a real nail biter. The game had to go in overtime and was finally decided with penalty shots. Spain opened the scoring in the first period but Korea managed to equalize pretty soon. In the second period Spain got the lead. Halfway the third Korea equalized and just a minute later took the lead by another goal. With less than three minutes left, Spain managed to equalize via Pedraz-Martin, bringing the game in overtime and penalty shots with a 5-4 ending in favor of Spain, host of the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada.
KAZ vs. JPN
Kazakhstan took the lead in this game getting ahead 3-0 in the third period. The fast skating Japanese attacked the Kazakh goal continiously but could not get the puck past the goalie. With three minutes left in the game Japan scored a goal on the powerplay. In a last resort, the Japanese coach pulled the goalie, but in vain. Kazakhstan scored two empty netters bringing the score to 5-1.
Team Canada had no problem with Slovakia. The Canadians comfortly skated to a 9-1 victory.
Russia, determined to defend its WU title, took the lead and never looked back. Czech equalized in the first but then remained scoreless. Russia won the game 6-1.
After an equal first and second period between Belarus and Team USA, Belarus took control of the game in the last and drilled in another three goals past US goalie Pyne, putting a 6-3 victory on the scoreboard.
