KAZAN – The fate of first medal events was decided on Day 1 of the 4th World University Sport Shooting Championship. The competitions were held at two venues.
Men’s and women’s Olympic shooting events of Trap took place today at the Sviyaga Shotgun Range. Silvana STANCO of Italy progressed into the final with the best result, she has 68 points after three stages of the qualification. Anastassiya DAVYDOVA (KAZ) qualified in the second place while Russian shooter Tatjana BARSUK finished third. Silvana STANCO managed to hold the nerve and secured a well-deserved win. She missed only 4 shots, which is the top result among the rest of the finalists. Her total score is 89. Anastassiya DAVYDOVA of Kazakhstan placed second. Despite missing 7 shots, 18 hits were enough to earn her a silver position with a total of 84. And bronze went to Lucia BOOROVA of Slovakia (83). Tatjana BARSUK scored 82 and missed the podium as the fourth place finisher.
In the men’s Trap Individual event at the Sviyaga Shotgun Range Denis ZOTOV hit all targets and climbed the top spot of the Day 1 standings (73). Two other favourites – Jan PRIVARA (CZE) and Brian BURROWS (USA) – have 73 points each as well. The Russian shooter tops the qualification as according to the rule if two or more shooters have equal scores, an athlete that hit more targets in the last stage gets a higher place in the qualification.
So far Russia tops the team standings with a total of 211 and is still four points ahead of its nearest pursuers. The Czech Republic managed to squeeze into the second position (207). Team USA has the same score (69 points in the third stage of the qualification round against 70 points of the Czech Republic).
Day 1 of the World University Shooting Sport Championship at the Shooting Range Complex in Mirny Township turned to be more productive for Team Russia bringing 6 medals at once: 4 golds (Sergey CHERVYAKOVSKIY – 50m Pistol; Liubov YASKEVICH – 10m Air Pistol; Russian men’s national team – 50m Rifle Prone Men; Russian female shooters – 10m Air Pistol) and 2 silvers (Russian male shooters – 50m Pistol, Ekaterina KORSHUNOVA – 10m Air Pistol).
Sergey CHERVYAKOVSKIY of Russia won gold in the men’s 50m Pistol event at the 4th World University Sport Shooting Championship. Finishing with a total score of 653.1, CHERVYAKOVSKIY outclassed Flavien GOUSTARD (FRA) who shot a 647.4 in the final. Another Frenchman, Vincent JEANNINGROS settled for bronze with just 0.3 behind (647.1).
50m Rifle Prone Men’ Team Podium
Liubov YASKEVICH managed to outscore the qualification leader Ekaterina KORSHUNOVA in the women’s 10m Air Pistol final. She took the first place by scoring 486.3 points. KORSHUNOVA (484.0) is second and Yi-Tzu TU YI of Taiwan (480.8) got the third place.
The country’s medal collection was increased as the Russian female shooters added the 10m Air Pistol team gold to the Russia’s medal collection at the 4th World University Sport Shooting Championship in Kazan. Ekaterina KORSHUNOVA, Liubov YASKEVICH and Alena SUSLONOVA were head and shoulders above their opponents while silver went to South Korea with the Chinese Taipei Shooting team being edged out into third place.
Andrey KONKOV, Nazar LUGINETS and Sergey KAMENSKIY managed to claw back a victory from the jaws of defeat in a titanic 50m Rifle Prone tussle. With the total score of Russia and Slovakia being equal (1,779 each), the Russian shooters made it onto the top spot of the podium thanks to a greater number of bullseyes. Poland finishes third with a total score of 1,775.
Russian shooters Sergey CHERVYAKOVSKIY, Alexey YASKEVICH and Rinat AYUPOV grabbed silver in the men’s 50m Pistol Team event with a total of 1,643 followed by Poland which placed third (1634). The team gold went to the French shooters. Vincent JEANNINGROS, Flavien GOUSTARD and Boris ARTAUD were the most accurate in the qualification round with a total of 1,646 points.
10m Air Pistol Women’s Podium
In the Men’s 50m Rifle Prone Henri JUNGHANEL (GER) was the one who captured the gold medal, finishing with a total of 700.5 points. Alexandr YERMAKOV of Kazakhstan was edged out into silver-medal position with a 699.5 total. Bronze went to Iranian shooter Mahdi JAFARIPOUYA (698.5) and Andrey KONKOV finished fourth thus leaving Team Russia out of the medal standings for the first time.
Nandinzaya GANKHUYAG of Mongolia won gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event. Silver went to Austrian Lisa UNGERANK. Xiang Wei Jasmine SER of Singapore got bronze medal. Anna SUSHKO passed the shoot off with a disappointing fifth result.
