SÃO PAULO – More than 200 student-athletes from seventeen states participated in the Judo, Karate and Taekwondo tournaments of the 2013 Brazilian University League of combat sports in São Paulo (SP), from 24 to 27 April. In addition to the medals and title disputes, the League of Combat Sports served as selection grounds for the judo team that will represent Brazil at the 2013 Universiade in Russia.
Catiere Moya (-48kg), Raquel Silva (-52kg), Ketleyn Quadros (-57kg), Mariana Silva (-63kg), Barbara Timó (-70kg), Rochele Nunes (+78 kg), Phelipe Pelim (-60kg), Luiz Revite (-66kg), João Pedro Macedo (-73kg), Vinicius Panini (-81kg), Eduardo Bettoni (-90kg), Rafael Buzacarini (-100kg) and David Moura (+100 kg) were the winners of the selective promoted by CBDU during the League.
Ketleyn Tables, bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the first Brazilian woman to win an Olympic medal in individual sports, will make her debut at a Universiade. And David Moura, bronze in the absolute division at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, once again wants to shine on the Universiade medal podium.
At the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, the Brazilian judo team won five bronze medals with Victor Penalber (- 81kg), Natalia Bordignon (-70kg), Marcelo Contini (-73kg), and David Cezar Claudirene Moura (Absolute).
With the support of the friends and public and fighting home, the athletes and universities from São Paulo were the big winners of the League. Unip, Universidade Paulista, became judo champion in the male and female categories and took the title in the overall standings.
‘The partnership between CBDU and the Brazilian Judo Confederation that has been established in recent years for the convocation of athletes for the Universiade integrates the young student-athletes who compete in CBDU tournaments and who are in the national teams. It is an opportunity to show the importance and the possibility of bringing the educational sport close to the high-performance sports’, said Luciano Cabral, CBDU President and FISU Vice-President.
