2nd WUC Speed Skating – Day 3 of Competitions

ALMATY – The third day of the 2nd World University Speed Skating Championship competition in Almaty (KAZ) ended on Saturday with a double victory for the teams of Poland and Russia. Irina Arshinova (RUS) won the 1,000m breaking the track record of the historic “Medeu” ice arena. The Russian clocked 1:19,31 and finished ahead of Katarzyna Wozniak (POL) and Mariya Sizova (KAZ). Wozniak came in 47ms behind the Russian with her 1:19,78 while Mariya Sizova finished third clocking 1:20,00.

The best in the women’s 5,000m was Alexandra Goss (POL) with 7:36,71. Two Russians showed a good performance with Tatyana Ushakova (7:38,86) finishing on the second place and her teammate Elena Sokhryakova (7:40,10) on the third.

 

It was also a good day for Sebastian Druszkiewicz (POL) in the fight for the gold medal in men’s 10,000m race. He was the first clocking 14:33,52, followed by Dutchman Simon Borsen with 14:34,39. Third place was for Adrian Wielgat (POL), bronze winner of yesterday’s 5,000m race. Local hero Kazakhstani Maxim Baklashkin finished 4th in this same competition.

The day was concluded with the medal awarding ceremonies and followed by the customary practice session and ice preparation. The Medeu Alpine Ice Arena has been complimented by all participants, athletes and coaches for the excellent quality of the ice.
