FISU endorses 1st University World Cup in Korfball

29 April 2015

NORWICH – The University of East Anglia (UEA) based in Norwich (GBR) hosted the first Korfball University World Cup gathering some of the best Korfball players in the world. This event was organised in the frame of the inclusion of Korfball in the FISU Sports programme from 2018 onwards. Indeed as for all the newly included disciplines, the International Korfball Federation (IKF) was requested to organize a test event in order to create preliminary relations between the national governing bodies of the sport and the FISU member associations.

Six countries took part in this event, i.e. China, Hong Kong China, Great-Britain, the Netherlands, Chinese Taipei and Turkey in Norwich and demonstrated an excellent quality of play in this discipline which has for main particularity its mixed teams.

The Netherlands, best nation in the world logically won the competition, though Chinese Taipei did not give up easily against some of the best players in the world. Korfball being a student sport, this University World Cup reached a very high level and promises great perspectives for the inaugural edition of the World University Korfball Championship which will be organised in 2018.
